Any collection of Early American furniture would not be complete without the inclusion of at least one painted project. The robust color and exuberant patterns of the flower and animal motifs are tastefully created to be most characteristic of Pennsylvania Dutch designs of German ancestry. The painted designs can be traced directly onto the wood using the full size patterns provided and they are color keyed for ease in painting. It makes a great chest regardless of finishing, as dove tail joinery is to be used at the corners. The chest is 18" deep, by 40" wide, the 24" high chest has been designed to be made of solid panels of glued-up boards fastened at the corners -- just as tradition dictates, with dovetails. Not up to dovetails? Use the joinery of your choice, as it will not change the overall dimensions. This is an intermediate to advanced level project. Painting aspect will require some skill even with the full size patterns, but it's nothing a good tole painter can't handle -- and the effect is well worth the effort.
